What Does A Filter's "Micron Rating" Mean?
Understanding Micron Sizes for Water Filters
When choosing a water filter it is important to pick one that will effectively remove the contaminants in your water. Water filters are made to remove a variety of substances, from large particles like sand and dirt, to tiny organism like bacteria.
What is a Micron Level?
Micron levels are used to determine the size of particles that a particular filter can remove; the smaller the micron level number, the more the particles it will remove. Although a water filter with a smaller number micron level will catch more contaminants, it will also clog faster and easier. So, the smallest micron level is not always the best choice.
What Micron Level Do I Need?
The best way to choose the right micron level for your water filtration needs is to determine what you need to remove from your water. Depending on the contaminant, the micron level range needed to properly filter your water will change. Please see the chart below to choose the right micron level for your individual water filtration needs.
- Contaminant to Be Removed
- Sand
- Silt
- Pollen
- Plant Sporesi
- Cysts
- Bacteria
- Micron Level Range Needed
- 20 - 100 Microns
- 2 - 20 Microns
- 10 - 100 Microns
- 10 - 25 Microns
- 2 - 50 Microns
- 0.2 - 10 Micron
